Surface Water Resources Division of the centre came into existence in November, 2012. Earlier this division was known as Geophysical Exploration Division followed by Groundwater Exploration Division and for a long time it was located at district head quarter of Jhansi, U.P. This Division was engaged in the field of ground water exploration and management in the region of drought effected and rocky terrain of Bundelkhand, saline affected area of Agra-Mathura and other parts of U.P. and other states since its inception. In March, 1997 , the Division started working as Water Resources Division–I and was engaged in water resources activities mainly in western part of U.P. in the revenue divisions of Agra, Bareilly, Meerut, Moradabad, Saharanpur and Kanpur and also carried out specific projects in the above or other areas of the State. Apart from exploration of groundwater using remote sensing and geophysical techniques, mapping of hydrogeomorphology, geology, waterlogged land, flood monitoring etc. with the use of available onboard Indian remote sensing Satellite (IRS) series and other satellites employing different sensors and Geographical information System (GIS) were the other priority areas of work for the division. The division was also involved in environmental impact assessment, geo statistical modelling, base line data generation, artificial recharge study, Land use/Land cover mapping, Cadastral resources mapping, G P S survey, R & D studies, training programme etc. The division has also participated with the other divisions of the Centre for various integrated study in different projects. Now as newly created Division, this division is engaged mainly in Surface Water Resources activities viz. Flood Inundation Mapping, Assessment of waterlogged areas etc. Projects on LIDAR Mapping, Utility Mapping, Groundwater Exploration and other related studies are also in progress. In 2015, the division is equipped with Mobile Lidar, terrestrial lidar and Bathymetric instruments for the survey and planning of road widening, bridge site, siltation and dredging of rivers etc. The newly fully equipped Lidar data processing Lab with server & workstations alongwith 3D printer and video conferencing facility is available. The modern software were installed for the data processing.
